A Clock from the Dump

Foundling clockThis clock is a foundling which we adopted from the local landfill in June 2002. It is unclear why it was discarded other than the pendulum was missing.

I inspected and oiled it, then made a crude pendulum from a wood dowel with a brass hose fitting as a weight. By drilling holes in the dowel, I adjusted the length to verify that the movement ran accurately.

Once I was certain that it ran properly I purchased a standard 4.5 inch pendulum from LaRose, cut the stick to length, and it has been running since.

This isn't a real Regulator; it was made in Japan, apparently by Little River. The movement seems well made and the hour chime is pleasant. It needs winding only monthly and keeps track of the day of the month.
